Billie Joe Armstrong was born in Oakland, California on February 17, 1972. He grew up in Rodeo, California, with his mother Ollie (a waitress), father Andrew (a truck driver and jazz musician), and five older brothers and sisters. Andrew died of esophageal cancer when Billie Joe was 10 years old. Armstrong’s interest in music began at a young age, when a teacher at Hillcrest Elementary School encouraged him to record a song, “Look for Love,” for local label Fiat Records when he was only 5 years old.
