Bill Hybels Early Life & Education

Hybels was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and raised there. He is Dutch-American and a member of the Christian Reformed Church in North America, which adheres to Calvinist theology. Hybels’ father was a wholesale produce entrepreneur whose work ethic served as a model for his son.

In a 2006 interview with the Chicago Tribune, he described a summer camp experience as a teenager at a Wisconsin summer camp that solidified his understanding and personal embrace of Christian belief. Hybels earned a bachelor’s degree in Biblical Studies from Trinity International University in suburban Chicago, as well as an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from TIU’s college.

While attending Trinity International University (then known as Trinity College), Hybels was challenged by a lecturer to build an Acts 2-based church, Gilbert Bilezikian. He gave up his business ambitions to follow the goal.

Together with his friend Dave Holmbo, Hybels co-founded ‘Son City’ in 1971. The group grew from 25 to 1,200 in just three years using modern music, theatre, and multimedia.

Hybels and other leaders began thinking of founding a new church after 300 youth queued for a service in May 1974. They polled the community to find out why people weren’t attending church. “Church is boring.” “they continually want for money”, “I don’t like being preached down to” are reported common responses. These responses molded the group’s view of the new church.

Due to difficulties in 1979, the church’s vision was recommissioned to be larger and deeper. Our leadership structures and goals are set up to build a full functioning Acts 2 community, rather than merely an evangelizing machine that doesn’t drive the roots deep and do other things.

The church moved to South Barrington in 1981. A 352,000-square-foot (32,700 m2) structure hosted six services every weekend for 15,000 people by 2000. A new worship center was built in 2004. That makes it one of America’s largest theaters, with a capacity of almost 7,000. The church had 25,000 weekly visitors in 2017. The eighth-largest church in America, according to Outreach 100.  As a result of the Hybels controversy and subsequent resignation of the whole senior leadership team, Religion News Service reported in September 2018 that enrollment has dropped by 9% across all Willow Creek campuses.

For the period from mid-2006 to mid-2008, Hybels was not substantially involved in church operations. From mid-2006 to Easter 2008, Gene Appel led the South Barrington Campus. In the Willow Creek Association, Appel’s role allowed Hybels to be more directly involved.
